Mr. Haahr is a Managing Principal of
Silver Portal Capital with over 25 years of experience in the real estate
capital markets. He has an extensive
track record of advising and raising capital for both private and public
companies, having been managing underwriter, placement agent and advisor on
over $16 billion of equity, debt and financial advisory transactions for the
real estate industry from 1992 to the present, involving more than 130
transactions.
Mr. Haahr directs a team that provides
services in the areas of strategic/financial advice and capital formation to a
focused group of private and public real estate clients owning/operating all
types of commercial, healthcare and hospitality properties. In addition to raising more than $12 billion
for publicly-traded REITs/REOCs he has advised and raised private equity
capital of over $4 billion for leading private companies in the industry,
including: a $150 million joint venture for a retail REIT, a $200 million
initial capitalization of a mortgage REIT, a $200 million joint venture and
$500 million restructuring for an affordable housing developer, a $100 million
joint venture for and owner/operator of office properties, a $100 million joint
venture for a developer of boutique hotels, an $80 million entity-level
investment in a developer of assisted living facilities, and a $100 million
joint venture for a student housing owner/operator. Mr. Haahr has also worked extensively in the
non-traded REIT sector, and provided strategic/financial advice to multiple
company management teams and boards of directors.
Prior to founding Silver Portal Capital
in 2001, Mr. Haahr was Co-Head and Managing Director of Real Estate Investment
Banking for Wachovia Securities from 1999-2000, where he was instrumental in re-engineering
the group’s business and calling strategy.
In addition to responsibilities as Group Head during this period, Mr.
Haahr created a business plan, founded and headed the Private Transactions
Group, established to link private institutional capital sources with private
and public real estate companies through strategic joint ventures.
Mr. Haahr also founded and ran the Real
Estate Lodging and Leisure Group at EVEREN Securities (successor firm to Kemper
Securities) from 1991 until joining Wachovia, where he had sole responsibility
for P&L and new business generation.
Under his direction, the group established a significant market presence
and became a leader in working with core and non-core real estate asset types.
Mr. Haahr received his MBA in Finance
from the University of Iowa, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Iowa
State University and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is a past and present member of various
corporate boards, currently serving as an independent director of Clarion
Partners Property Trust, and as a trustee of the James A. Graaskamp Center for
Real Estate at the University of Wisconsin.
Mr. Haahr maintains a number of industry affiliations including the
Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), and
speaks regularly at a variety of industry events.
